Angela Gregory (1903-1990) was Louisiana’s first female sculptor to gain international recognition. Heralded in her lifetime, she is no longer well-known. Yet, her legacy encompasses architectural sculpture on many important buildings, including the Louisiana State Capitol, and three public monuments, including one in Port Allen.

Over the last ten years, the museum has amassed a growing collection of Gregory’s work that spans almost the entirety of her career. Recently, the West Baton Rouge Historical Association received another large donation of artwork from Angela Gregory Legacy LLC thanks to the assistance of Susan Hymel.   The donated works as well as Gregory’s sculptures on loan from other institutions, will appear in the new gallery space in a three-year exhibition entitled, Angela Gregory: Doyenne of Louisiana Sculpture. This exhibition was guest curated by Elizabeth Chubbuck Weinstein and chronicles Angela’s inspiring story in three one-year installations and provides insight into the life and legacy of this important Louisiana artist. The first installation will be on view through August 6th, 2023.
